Gene Roddenberry Got It Right

One theme that came up often in the Star Trek franchise was that problems will arise when one culture interferes with affairs of another. Some would say Gene Roddenberry was a visionary. Well actually all one has to do is look at U.S. history to understand how true it is that problems will arise.

The problems in Cuba, Iraq, and Afghanistan are partly the creation of the U.S. Our founding fathers warned us not to get involved with the affairs of other nations. Some people would argue that involvement in these nation and others in the last century was necessary to secure our freedoms but that makes about as much sense spanking your child in the morning because you believe he will disobey in the afternoon. (Sometime being reactive is better than being proactive.)

Today we are stuck in conflicts because of bad decision in the past. By past I don't mean the decisions made in the last ten years. They are just the out workings of the decisions made sixty years ago. The biggest one is that after World War II the U.S. appointed itself international hall monitor and I don't think we have done a very good job of it.

The situation now is that the U.S. is so heavily involved that we can just stop. We really need to come up with an action plan that makes us less involved in what other nations are doing. But we won't do it.
